Reconstruction of the
Tan Hill 24-06-2003 formation

1. Draw a circle. Draw and extend the horizontal and vertical centerlines.

2. Construct the inscribed 18-sided regular polygon (18-gon) of circle 1, pointing up.
(Notice, that an 18-gon can not be constructed by ruler-and-compass-rules; the co-ordinates of its angular points have to be calculated).

3. Draw the rays from the center of circle 1 to the angular points of 18-gon 2. Number the rays counterclockwise starting at the upper one.

4. Draw the connecting line between the intersections of circle 1 and rays 3 nrs. 2 and 18.

5. Construct a circle concentric to circle 1, tangent to line 4.

6. Draw the connecting line between the intersections of circle 1 and rays 3 nrs. 12 and 17.

7. Construct a circle concentric to circle 1, tangent to line 6.

8. Copy circle 1 four times, two to the upper intersections of the vertical centerline and circles 1 and a copied circle itself, and two to the lower intersections, as shown.

9. Draw a line, tangent to the upper and lower circles 8 at the right sides. Extend rays 3 nrs. 12 and 17 up to this line.

10. Construct a circle concentric to circle 1, passing through the intersections of line 9 and extended rays 3 nrs. 12 and 17.

11. Construct the circumscribed square of circle 10, one side up (horizontally).

12. Construct the circumscribed circle of square 11.

13. Construct the circumscribed equilateral triangle of circle 10, pointing down.

14. Construct the circumscribed circle of triangle 13.

15. Extend rays 3 nrs. 14 and 15 up to circle 10.

16. Draw the connecting line between the intersections of circle 10 and the extended rays 15.

17. Construct a circle concentric to circle 1, tangent to line 16.

18. Copy circle 17 to the upper intersection of circle 14 and the vertical centerline.

19. Construct a circle concentric to circle 1, tangent to circle 18 at the upper side.

20. Draw the connecting line between the intersections of circles 14 and 18.

21. Construct the intersection-point of extended ray 3 nr. 16 and line 20, extended to the right.

22. Construct a circle concentric to circle 1, passing through intersection-point 21.

23. Extend all rays 3 up to circle 19.

24. From the intersection of circle 5 and ray 23 nr. 2, draw three lines, up to the intersections of circle 19 and rays 23 nrs. 1, 18 and 17 respectively, as shown.

25. Repeat step 24 five times, starting at rays 23 nrs. 5, 8, 11, 14 and 17, repeatedly drawing three lines to the corresponding other intersections of circle 19 and rays 23, as shown.

26. Circles 1, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 19 and 22, and lines 24 and 25 make up the necessary ingredients for the reconstruction.

27. Leave out all parts not visible in the formation itself.
