Reconstruction of the
2000 Chilbolton Radio Telescope formation

1. Draw a square. Divide it into four equal squares.

2. Draw the diamond (tilted square) by connecting the midpoints of the sides of the square.

3. Construct the inscribed circle of the diamond. (Call the circles according to the step; this is circle 3).

4. Construct a square in the lower right corner of the first quadrant (upper righthand side), with a side a quarter of that of the large square. Draw the (other) diagonal.

5. Construct a circle, concentric with circle 3, passing through the center of the small square just added.

6. Construct two circles, inscribed in the righthand side quadrants.

7. Construct a circle, concentric with circles 3 and 5, tangent to both circles 6.

8. Draw two "rays" each in circles 6, horizontal and vertical, as shown.

9. Construct four circles, centered at the endpoints of all rays (introduced in step) 8, and tangent to circle 3.

10. Construct four circles, concentric with circles 9, tangent to circle 5.

11. In circles 10, draw two rays each, angled at 45°, as shown.

12. Construct eight circles, centered at the endpoints of rays 11, tangent to the sides of square 1.

13. Concentric with circles 10, construct four circles, tangent to circles 12.

14. Again, draw two rays each in circles 12, horizontal and vertical, 16 in total, as shown.

15. First draw a line from endpoints of rays 11, as shown. Then construct circles, tangent to this (or similar) line, centered at the endpoints of rays 14, except for the two middle ones, fourteen in total.

16. Concentric to the last circles (15), construct circles (fourteen again), tangent to circles 9.

17.
Construct two large help circles, concentric with circles 6, and tangent to circles 10, at the far side, as shown (1, 2). Then, construct a circle, with the center at the intersection of the two help circles (at left, 3), passing through the center of circle 3 (4).

18. Construct a circle, concentric with circle 17, tangent to circles 6.

19. Copy a circle 6 with its center at that of circles 17 and 18.

20. Construct the inscribed diamond (square tilted at 45°) in circle 19, and draw the diagonals.

21. Construct the inscribed circle in diamond 20.

22.
Mirror circles 3 and 5, relative to the vertical diagonal in diamond 20, as shown. (This is the vertical centerline of the formation).

23.
Construct two lines, angled at 45°, and tangent to circle 5, and its mirror.

24.
Construct a circle, concentric with circles 19 and 21, tangent to lines 23.

25.
Now mirror, in the same way as in step 22, all circles 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15 and 16.

26.
Leaving out everything not used, finishes the reconstruction of the 2000 Chilbolton Radio Telescope formation (except for the small circles at the periphery).
